It’s a facility for hosting video footage ready for use by broadcasters and media outlets.
We take footage, digitize it, edit it and then post it on the Footagefile site, ready for download by programme makers. Users get the opportunity to view the files as streaming video before downloading. Footagefile has the server capacity to host large video files and ensure a speedy, effective download service
Who would put video on a FootageFile site?
Companies, organisations, individuals, PR companies – anyone who wants to make footage available to broadcasters and the growing number of internet video sites.
Who would typically access the footage?
Primarily TV news organisations, documentary programme makers and internet video sites. Many newspapers now have streaming video programmes on their websites and the list is growing daily.
Can anyone else access the footage?
Our digitised video files are downloadable by anyone, assuming they have a username and password so companies may want to use these files for training videos, presentations and various internal uses. Unlike those used on public sites such as YouTube, our video files are normally large, broadcast-quality and need professional edit systems to operate correctly.
Footagefile is part of Airtime Television, which has been supplying video to TV news outlets for 1991. We constantly report live news hence our knowledge of transmission methods and the TV industry.
Why use downloads instead of tape distribution ?
Downloads can be accessed by any broadcaster, anywhere and have the capacity to reach hundreds, even thousands of outlets simultaneously. They can be updated at a moment’s notice – crucial for the news industry. The flipside is the download time – Footagefile uses a high-speed ftp link but download is dependent on the user’s internet speed. We try to keep video files to a maximum duration of five minutes to contain file size.
Do users require technical knowledge ?
Preparation and uploading of footage is undertaken by Footagefile staff so there are no issues for the clients. We assume that people who access footage will have a basic knowledge of the concept of video files and the ftp system
What video formats can be downloaded?
These vary according to the footage and its likely useage. Our largest uncompressed broadcast files will be AVI but we usually include a choice or other, more compressed files such MPEG2 or FLV, for faster downloading. MPEG2 is more than adequate for web use.
The service is free for media outlets and users can download as many files as they wish. The cost of of hosting depends on the number of files, their type, and their length of display. We can quote you an immediate price and can guarantee it will be substantially cheaper than an equivalent tape distribution service.
